Citroen HY Windscreen Rubber
This Citroen HY van in Teignmouth, Devon required a new windscreen rubber after some restoration work by a garage.
The customer sourced their own rubber from a Citroen HY parts supplier – the new rubber was expensive and cut from a roll to the wrong length and then glued… very poor. A proper endless rubber with a vulcanised join is always better in terms of fitting and reducing the chances of leaks. After speaking with the parts supplier they then suggested the rubber was indeed the correct length!
Having spent 30 years fitting windscreens I could clearly see the excessive amount of rubber was never going to fit into the aperture even after allowing for a small amount of excess. We took the decision to cut around 1.5 – 2 inches off the windscreen rubber, making sure there was ample rubber into the corners and allowing extra to stop shrinkage on the joint.
The amount of rubber removed worked out perfectly and we were able to fit the windscreen successfully.
If you are purchasing a Citroen HY windscreen rubber be very careful of these cheap low quality rubbers, especially if they don’t seem to fit around the windscreen due to the rubber being cut far too long. A small amount of excess rubber is ok, but there is a limit to what will fit around a windscreen aperture – windscreens are manufactured fairly accurately so therefore when a windscreen rubber is placed around the glass it should also be about the same size and shape – not 2 inches too long and causing it to hang of the sides of the glass….
