WINDSCREEN IMPACT DAMAGE

Most damaged glass occurs when a stone or foreign object impacts the glass. The force of a stone when it strikes the windscreen or side window causes the glass to fail resulting in a stone chip, cracked windscreen or a completely shattered glass. When this happens the glass loses strength and although you may still be able to drive – the damage from the chip, cracked or shattered window will compromise your vehicle’s safety in the event of an accident as most windows are now bonded to add structural strength to your vehicle.

WINDSCREEN STRESS CRACK

A windscreen stress crack can occur if the car body twists and bends to cause the glass to fail. This usually happens in the event of an accident or when the windscreen has been replaced incorrectly and the subsequent rust underneath the urethane puts pressure on the glass causing it to crack.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TOUGHENED CAR GLASS SHATTERS

Most vehicles have toughened glass in the all windows except the windscreen which is usually laminated. When toughened glass shatters, it breaks into small chunks to reduce the risk of the glass causing serious injury. For more information on toughened glass – click here.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A LAMINATED WINDSCREEN BREAKS

Your car, van or lorry will normally have a laminated glass in the windscreen. Laminated glass is actually two pieces of glass held together with a thin plastic layer. When laminated glass breaks, the broken glass sticks to the plastic interlayer and this holds it together preventing the glass entering the vehicle.
